########################################
The prospect of multitasking has always been quite a exciting one,
but MagiC promises pre-emptive multitasking with minimal loss of
speed on a normal ST. Too good to be true? Read on to find out.
MagiC lets you run upto 10 programs and 6 accessories all at the
same time and allowing you to switch between freezing, halting and
executing them at any time you feel fit. MagiC as default uses
pre-emptive multitasking mode which means that programs are given
a maximum amount of processor time that they can have and so the
processor is not slowed down unless it has to.
The installation program is a fairly simple affair but it does
its job and is fairly easy to use. Once it's installed, a quick
reset is all that's needed to get Magidesk up and running.
Magidesk is Magic's replacement desktop which is actually an
adapted version of the popular Kaosdesk and it is easy to use
although as a TOS 2.06 user, I do not like it and would recommend
considering 'Ease'. The desktop works just as you would expect and
the programs are loaded without ever exiting the desktop. To
launch another program you just click on any empty part of the
menu bar and the MagiC menu will appear allowing you to switch
applications or launch another program. During multitasking there
is no noticeable loss of speed with the optimum settings and with
NVDI 2.5 installed and running That's Write 3, Arabesque Pro,
Tempus 2 & Gembench the system was running at 96% speed and
graphics were at 250% as MagiC actually speeds up your ST and is
almost noticeable when single tasking.
The MagiC manual, although good to begin with, is not perfect
and does not explain some of the more advanced uses of MagiC. One
example is when installing the program it tells you that the Auto
directory (not the same as THE Auto folder) can be safely left
empty for now and it then never mentions it so I have not a clue
as to what it is for.
The program itself is simply brilliant and is well worth buying
except for a few things:
1. The Magidesk is just not a good desktop to supply as it has
severe limitations but I suppose is supplied only until Ease
comes along. The desktop will be an improvement for TOS 1.xx users
but a big downgrade for TOS 2.xx and above users.
2. The program has clashes with some system enhancement utilities
(I am not sure which ones but ICD Copyfix is one culprit) which
can cause it to crash when loading another program.
3. The program has a few incompatibilities although they were to
be expected really. They were View 2 & Protracker V2.
Without any system enhancements, utilities, except possibly NVDI
(MagiC and NVDI are both by the same people), the system is
remarkably stable and has never crashed when like this.
VERDICT:If you want multitasking that is fast, reliable, cheap and
fairly easy to use you really can't get much better than
MagiC. It's that simple! Although it is supposed to work
on a 520, at least 2 Meg and a hard drive is recommended.
